Editorial Leadership Experience

In my various positions on staff, I had many opportunities to make an impact on the ReMarker and the greater journalism community. I have found that respectful leadership leads to stronger collaboration and a reason to work hard.

Notable experiences:

As a rookie, I was fortunate to have a mentor in the grade above who made me feel comfortable with and confident in my work. This experience laid the foundation for my belief that mentorship is essential to development. As Life Editor, I tried to reciprocate that same impact I once felt. Finally as Editor-In-Chief, I had an opportunity to systematically expand this. I instituted a ‘buddy system’ to pair up rookie writers with more experienced editors, hoping to break down natural barriers between students in different grades. Over the summer, I planned several team bonding and journalism training events. In Fall of 2025, I had the privilege of speaking at 2 events during the NSPA Nashville Conference (pictured above). The first event was an Editor-In-Chief panel with other Pacemaker finalist programs, and the second event was a presentation of our production cycle and larger scale enterprise stories.

We use a variety of shared documents to keep our staff organized. Every cycle, we start off with a pitch day (pictured on the left), and the best of those 100s of story ideas get slotted into the slotting docs (pictured on the right). Finally, we wrap up the cycle with our production calendar (middle) to assign page design responsibilities.
